Binny Bansal exits the PhonePe<\/a> board, marking a significant leadership change for the digital payments giant as it continues its aggressive expansion in financial services and technology. Bansal was instrumental in Flipkart’s acquisition of PhonePe in 2016. He went on to become an integral part of the digital payments firm even after his separation from Flipkart in December 2022. Binny Bansal, co-founder of Flipkart, resigned from the board of PhonePe, his second departure from a company backed by Walmart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Bansal had also quit Flipkart’s board to dedicate time to his new venture, OppDoor. Binny Bansal’s exit from the PhonePe Board marks another transition in his entrepreneurial life. Nevertheless, the official reasons for his resignation are not known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PhonePe CEO on Binny Bansal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sameer Nigam, the founder and CEO of PhonePe, said his active engagement, strategic guidance, and personal mentorship at the helm have deeply enriched their discussions. “Binny will be missed!” Nigam said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bansal’s leaving marks the end of an era as PhonePe moves ahead with new management and strategic objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PhonePe’s Reshuffle in the Top Tier<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a bid to enhance its corporate governance, PhonePe has appointed Manish Sabharwal, vice-chairman of TeamLease Services, as an independent director and chairman of the audit committee. Sabharwal is the top Indian heading the staffing industry and economic policymaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, Sabharwal served on the board of the Reserve Bank of India. His extensive experience in shaping India’s macroeconomic policies and employment strategies makes him a valuable addition to PhonePe\u2019s leadership team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigam welcomed Sabharwal, saying, “His incredible depth of understanding of India’s macro economy, along with his leadership in shaping India’s policies for education, employment, and employability, will be invaluable as PhonePe continues to work towards our shared vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He would be responsible for financial reporting, internal controls, and risk management processes. He mentioned that he had a firm commitment towards the enhancement of healthy financial governance of PhonePe. His expertise will also be aligned with the company’s large-scale expansion plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PhonePe’s Continued Growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

PhonePe is aggressive in terms of growth despite the change in leadership. Earlier this year, the company appointed Ritesh Pai as the CEO of its international payments business. This move reflects a focus by the company on scaling operations beyond India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to expanding its UPI payment services, PhonePe has also diversified into financial services like insurance, lending, and wealth management. It is also developing new consumer tech offerings, including the Pincode app and the Indus App Store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Vision for 2047<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

PhonePe is looking at the long term. The management dreams of contributing to building a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047. Diversification of PhonePe’s portfolio falls in place with this vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sabharwal will strengthen PhonePe’s governance and strategic decision-making: Sabharwal will further consolidate the company’s position in the digital payments and financial services space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Binny Bansal’s exit marks a big leadership transition for PhonePe. Indeed, much of its journey so far has been helped by his contribution. With Manish Sabharwal coming on board, there is new expertise to drive the governance and growth of PhonePe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
